step-by-step: painting a jackal

This short tutorial was put together for Painting Animal Clinic at Gen Con Indy 2004. For this tutorial I used the Jackal figure from Crocodile Games with only 5 color palletes, courtesy of Iron Wind Metal paints.

Color
Colors used are Iron Wind Metal paints.
Dun, Leather, Black, Dark Grey, Ivory.

1: Priming & Applying Basecoat
The figure is primed white, using GW White primer. Basecoat the figure with Dun, then apply a wash of Leather + Dun mix to get a warmer basecoat color and darker appearance on the crevices.

2: Apply basecoat on 2nd area
Apply black coat on the top part of the body, head, back side of ears, top and bottom tip of the tail.

3: Apply Highlight for black fur
Apply highlight on the black coat with Dark Grey + Black mix using drybrush technique. If you wish to achieve a cleaner result, you may highlight each fur by placing the highlight at towards the end of the fur with a fine detail brush.

4: Apply 2nd Highlight for black fur
Apply 2nd highlight on the black coat with Dark Grey + Ivory mix. In this step, it’s recommended to use fine detail brush and apply the highlight in individual hair strand.

5: Apply Highlight for tan fur
Apply highlight on the Dun color with Ivory. Using a flat drybrush, lightly brush the Ivory sideways. Make sure the paintbrush is not loaded with paint. Wipe off the paint on paper towel until it's almost gone. Repeat this step until you are satisfied with the result. You may add final touch of the highlight by applying it at the end of the individual hair strand to achieve cleaner result (use fine detail brush for this).

6: Paint the face
Apply Black coat on the nose, eyes and top part of the muzzle. Apply highlight on the muzzle with a mix of Dark Grey and Ivory. Keep applying highlight until it reaches warm light grey and blend the edges with the rest of the muzzle color. Apply Ivory for highlight on the nose. Paint Ivory for eyeball and paint black dot for the pupil.

The finished jackal.
